Deputy Principal Years 7 and 8
Welcome to Term 2!
It’s always a little tricky with all of the short weeks in Term 2 but the staff and student are getting on with teaching and learning when we are here.
Assessment Dates
Just a reminder that families and students are able to access all assessment dates via Compass. Please use this communication tool to know when your child is working on assessment. A reminder also that students who are absent when assessment is due do need to submit a Special Provisions forms. Care Group teachers and classroom teachers are able to support students through this process.
School Events
We are about to commence our Athletics Carnival with pre-run events occurring. The 3km, 1500m and 800m events are all run prior to the carnival and students have had the opportunity to nominate for these. All students are expected to attend school on Thursday 22nd May and Friday 23rd May.
Student Leadership
The 2025/2026 student leadership process has now commenced. Mentor application for Years 8 and 11 have now been finalised. Mentor applications for Years 7,9 and 10 open on Monday 12th May. Leadership applications for successful Year 8 and 11 Mentors also open on Monday. We encourage students who show our school values to apply for these school leadership positions.
Year 7 2026
This week I have commenced site visits to our feeder schools to meet our 2026 Year 7 cohort. I look forward to getting around our feeder schools in the coming weeks.
Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Policy
Participation in Co-Curricular Extra-Curricular and activities is guided by our school policy. This includes activities such as School Sport and excursions which are not essential to the students’ learning program. For students to be able to participate, they must return all forms by the due date, maintain an average attendance of 92% (with absences supported by a medical certificate), demonstrate satisfactory behaviour and school fees must be up to date. Students who are eligible will find their name listed in the School Documentation on Compass. Students who are not listed are able to meet with their relevant Deputy Principal to work through their individual circumstances and to ascertain whether or not they have a case to apply to the Principal for Special Considerations.

Caregroup Attendance
Caregroup runs from 8:55am to 9:05am each day. This session is a part of required attendance each day. The purpose of the Caregroup session includes;
- Sharing of key notices for the day (room changes etc)
- A wellbeing check-in to start the day
- Roll marking
- Attendance check-in (whole school focus)
- Promotion of House Spirit and other school events
Failure to attend Caregroup (or year parade) can impact on attendance data for your child. Please encourage them to be at school on time to attend these sessions each day.
Year 10 SET Planning 2025
Our Year 10 students are approaching their Senior Pathway Subject Selection process. One element of choosing their senior pathway will be a SET planning process (which includes a meeting with the parent, child and a member of the school leadership team)
On Wednesday the 6th of August (Term 3) all year 10 students will not attend school for the day. Through, the day each child will be scheduled to attend a meeting to discuss their possible pathways in 2026.
These discussions will focus on the subjects they may wish to take in Year 11 as well as their eligibility to enrol in these classes based on current grades (or other perquisites)
Pathways for students once they complete Year 10 (or turn 16) include:
- Continued full time studies (Year 11 and 12)
- School based apprenticeship (Four days at school and one in the work place) * Subject to student meeting attendance and achievement requirements.
Alternatively students can also explore the following pathways:
- Employment (casual or full time) of at least 25 hours per week or more
- Full time traineeship or apprenticeship
Winter Uniforms
As we begin to move into the cooler winter months students may require additional clothing to remain warm. Our students are required to wear the approved winter uniform options. Our students are permitted to wear:
- Plain Black Tracksuit pants
- School Royal Blue jumper
- School Spray Jacket
- Students may wear short sleeved undershirts
Students are not permitted to wear:
- Jumpers / Jackets with Hoods (or non-school logos)
- Beanies
- Jeans (or any denim product)
For further information about the school uniform please refer to page 8 and 9 of your Child’s school diary or the school website.
If your child requires support to have the correct winter uniform please contact your childs year level Deputy Principal.

Student Leadership
We have begun the process for electing our 2024/2025 Student Leaders. Mentor applications were provided to interested Year 11 students in Week 1 and were due in Week 2. This will lead on to leadership applications.
We encourage all students to give back to the school and community and this is a way to leave a lasting legacy whilst providing a great character reference for future resumes.
Students driving vehicles
Please ensure that your child is not transporting other students without their parent/carer’s consent. Students are not permitted to drive to or from events in school time without consent forms being completed prior. If this is an option that the school is allowing, we will have communicated that to you in the weeks leading up to that event.
Ski Trip Information Evening
Save the date: Monday 26th May 6pm in N01.
It is compulsory for students attending ski trip and at least one parent or carer to attend this event. We will provide a lot of important detail about the excursion on this night and will require you to sign to say you have heard and understood this information. This is a high risk excursion so this step is crucial in our planning.
Interim Levels of Achievement
I am currently gathering results for both Year 11 and 12 students to track their progress towards their QCE.
We are required to report students’ results to QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) at intervals set by them. QCE credit progressively accrues in students’ learning accounts.
Year 11 students are currently completing Unit 1 in each subject. This Unit is worth 1 QCE point. By the end of this semester, students should have added at least 6 points to their QCE bank. This will be a great start to getting the 20 points required to achieve a QCE.
Credit from General and Applied courses of study will accrue when the set standard is met and reported. Results reported as satisfactory for Unit 1 or Unit 2 will accrue one credit each to a QCE.
Unit 1 will be completed in term 2 of year 11, and Unit 2 term 4 of year 11. The Unit 3 & 4 pair will be completed in term 4 of year 12.
Year 12 students are currently working through Unit 3 in the Unit 3 & 4 pair. This pair is worth 2 QCE points.

If your child is concerned about passing their current unit, please encourage them to speak to their class teacher to get some additional help. The curriculum area Head of Department is available to assist as well. Please contact the class teacher or Head of Department if you have any concerns.
A reminder that students who do not complete a piece of assessment in a Unit or in the Unit 3 & 4 pair are unable to be graded for the unit, regardless of whether they complete the remaining piece/s of assessment in the Unit/s.
Year 11 and 12 Assessment – Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments Process
Please remember that for any extensions or alternative exam dates for medical reasons, a medical certificate is required. Ensure that you contact me directly as soon as possible (via email or phone) so I can discuss arrangements with you. Students must see me as soon as they return to school, to make alternative assessment dates.
Any other reason must fit into the following criteria:
- the event is unforeseen and beyond the student’s control (e.g. death of a family member)
- it is not of the student’s own choosing or that of their parents/carers (e.g. not a family holiday)
- it has an adverse effect on the student’s ability to attend or participate in assessment.
Students are not eligible on the following grounds:
- unfamiliarity with the English language
- teacher absence or other teacher-related difficulties
- matters that the student could have avoided, e.g. misreading an examination timetable, misreading instructions in examinations
- timetable clashes
- matters of the student’s or parents'/carers' own choosing, e.g. family holidays or sporting events (excluding school sport)
If you have any questions or I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Year 7 Humanities – Exploring the Ancient Past
This Semester, Year 7 students explored significant events, developments, and achievements of ancient societies, with a particular focus on the histories of early First Nations Peoples of Australia. By studying these stories and contributions, students gained a deeper understanding of both our heritage and its relevance to our shared future.
Students began by examining the concept of deep time, a framework used by geologists, archaeologists, and anthropologists to describe immense periods of history. They investigated a range of methods used to uncover the ancient past, such as timelines and other interpretive tools. Through this process, students applied their critical thinking skills to evaluate sources of evidence and understand how historians and archaeologists reconstruct the past.
As part of their learning, students also undertook a creative project: designing and building a 3D model representing a significant aspect of Indigenous Australian history from the ancient past. This could include:
A historical site (e.g., Budj Bim eel traps, Murujuga rock art, or Wilgie Mia ochre mine),
A key event or development (e.g., early agriculture, trading networks, or responses to climate change), or
A cultural practice or tradition (e.g., fire-stick farming, ceremonial sites, or seasonal food gathering).
Students selected their topic of interest, conducted research, and then brought their understanding to life through their 3D creations. They also had the opportunity to consult their teacher to explore other topics or sites of personal interest.

Uniforms
The second-hand uniforms are held within the school to aid students that may need a change of clothes or correct school wear.
These clothes are made up of donations from parents and the community.
Unfortunately, we are running low on shirts both senior and junior.
If you have any lying around the house, please feel free to drop them in to the office.
Your donations will help many.
